Breeding Leopard Geckos - What You Need to Know

Among all types of lizards, leopard geckos are one of the simplest to breed yourself. Leopard geckos are popular as a result of their aesthetic qualities, which can be altered through breeding.

The first thing you will want to do in the process of breeding your leopard geckos is to verify that both the male and the female are sexually mature. How do you determine the sex of your gecko? A leopard gecko’s offspring is determined by the temperature of the incubation of the eggs. If the the incubator’s temperature is decreasd to approximately 80 degrees, the clutch develops into females. The clutch will almost certainly be a male if the temperature in the incubator remains close to 90 degrees. If leopard gecko egss are incubated at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, the resulting clutch will contain both sexes.

Leopard Geckos sustain themselves almost entirely on insects. When kept in captivity, leopard geckos will eat crickets, mealworms, superworms, silkworms, and small cockroaches to survive. You may want to offer your leopard gecko a pinkie mouse as a rare treat, on occasion. A baby leopard gecko should only be handled by adults when it’s a few days old. females who have reached sexual maturity will find pinkie mice an ideal choice of diet. An unusual and special treat is a waxworm. Leopard geckos may become dependent on waxworms, so you should only offer them occasionally. These have a similar adverse effects on a leopard gecko’s diet as cholocolate has on ours. To avoid choking the gecko, ensure that its food is no bigger than half the capacity of the gecko’s head.

Caring for leopard geckos amounts to being aware of their nutritional needs. Be guided by your gecko, only give as much food as he needs then. This varies according to the leopard gecko’s size. Your leopard gecko may eat anywhere between four and eight crickets at once. You should not let crickets run loose in your leopard gecko’s cage for an extended stretch of time. You’ll get a stressed gecko who may be chewed by starving crickets. Mealworms, superworms, are among the food which might be left in a dish in the leopard gecko’s cage without causing it any danger.

When referring to albino leopard geckos, there are three variety of strains the Tremper, Rainwater the Las Vegas city& Bell. The trio of albino varieties are each the result of a recessive genetic trait. This means that if you bred a Tremper albino with a Rainwater or Bell albino, the offspring would not be albino, they would be normal. Recessive traits happened because certain genes that control specific aspects of an animal mutate for some reason. These traits are normally found out randomly, so there is nothing that can be done to increase the probability of discovering a new recessive trait. One has to rely greatly on luck while this particular specie is bred.

It is generally quite hard to distinguish among the three varieties of albino leopard geckos. Normally, it is an educated guess as to which strain an adult albino leopard gecko is. The Tremper strain is the most commonly seen of all the albino leopard geckos. To be seen, they were the first of the albino strains. Often, albino geckos are sold as “mocha Strain”, as they have a brown color. In addition, they could exhibit a vivid white or pink hue. The lightest eyes are lighter than a non-albino leopard gecko’s eye to bright red in color. Unlike other albino strains, they have much darker, high-contrast pink areas. The Bell variety of albino leopard gecko possesses the most vivid red eyes of any of the 3 types. The Bell albino’s eye color normally remains red, or pink, even into adulthood. Within the three strains of albinos; all show a sensitivity to bright light. Albinos don’t care for light which makes them less lekely to eat during the daylight hours.

Due to their easy to care for nature, as leopard geckos continue to gain in popularity, the possibility of different color variations grow. The number of known dominant recessive traits could increase in the period ahead. The breeding of mutations with mutations will accelerate the rate of variation making these animals which are already unique to be even more unique.

New Leopard Gecko Project

So I have started setting up my new leopard gecko enclosure. I am planning on setting up a breeding colony to go with my existing female. She laid 3 eggs last year but all were infertile, I think she was a bit too young.

So the viv I got is 90cm x 45cm and has front opening and top opening doors, 12″ x 12″ heat mat and UV lighting. The exciting part is that I have ordered some Excavator Clay which is made by Zoo Med. I always struggle with substrates with my leo’s and have been using carpet for a while. But I like my vivs to be as naturaly as possible and I just cant help but see carpets/newspaper/tissue as being really un-natural. Excavator clay is a reptile use modelling clay that can be shaped and set in to any shape then goes hard enough to not be consumed by the geckos, but soft enough for them to dig in, thats the plan anyway.

I will be using a small bit of very fine reptile sand to go over my heat mat as the clay is not suitable for heat mats, this sand should be fine as all the geckos in my enclosure will be near enough adult size.

Anyway fingers crossed my clay substrate will get delivered soon so I can complete my set up and get my colony of geckos together.

Hissstory: Pilau was an unwanted pet left at a nature center. The nature center sent Pilau to us in April 2010.

RA Diet: Crickets.

Natural Diet: Insects and other small invertebrates.

Range: India, Indonesia (Java, Timor), New Guinea, Oceania;Belau, Admiralty Islands, Bismarck Archipelago, Solomon Islands, Rennell;Bellona, Santa Cruz Islands.

Habitat: The canopy and understory of tropical rain forests.

Size: 5-8 inches long, including the tail.

Lifespan: Probably 10-20 years.

Reproduction: Females lay 1-2 eggs at a time by “gluing” them to surfaces such as leaf stalks. The eggs hatch in 3-6 months.

Conservation: Most of the white lined geckos for sale in the United States have been collected in the wild and imported. Most geckos (and other wild animals) do not survive this process. The few that do survive to be sold as a pet are usually very ill. If you are thinking of getting a gecko as a pet, we recommend you adopt from an animal rescue organization or purchase from a legitimate breeder.

Cool Facts: Like all “true” geckos, white lined geckos have microscopic scales in the shape of hooks on the bottom of their feet. These scales grab on to microscopic imperfections found on every surface. This enables them to walk vertically or even upside down on almost any surface! Scientists are studying gecko feet in order to develop super strong tape, and maybe even gloves and shoes you could wear to walk up a wall. Just like Spider-man – or GECKO MAN!

Impacted Leopard Gecko " A Big Problem "

The #1 problem with the leopard gecko is impaction.An impacted gecko is a common occurrence cause by a number of different things. Your gecko can become impacted by ingesting sand if you are using sand as a substrate. You see when go after their prey and miss they strike the sand and sometimes they can not spit it out and swallow it. This is the reason some experts are against using sand as a substrate. Other experts say the gecko is trying to replace some vitamin deficiency by eating sand.

You should be able to tell impaction by feeling a hard lump on their belly. They should go to a veterinarian but here are some home remedies. Number one, give it a bath and number two, give it a couple drops of olive oil with a baby syringe. Do not force movement of the hind legs if you notice your gecko has lost some movement in the hind leg area.

Impaction is a severe blockage of the intestines and if they still have a good appetite and are pooing you can just about rule out impaction. Gecko babies poo more that the grownup’s do.

Impaction can be caused by feeding your gecko to many meal worms because the exoskeleton of the meal worms can be hard to digest. Crickets can be their staple leopard gecko feed and supplementing with other insects. Also feed them phoenix worms, wax worms at times because they are full of fat, dubia roaches, silk worms and horn worms. Feeding the geckos the right foods can lesson the chance of them becoming impacted.

Now that we have gone through all of that I will list the things that will cause a gecko to become impacted.

# 1 Loose substrate

Your little pet could possibly chew loose substrate such as sand, gravel or coconut husks and if they swallow any of this they can become impacted because they can not digest any of this.

# 2 Leopard Gecko feed

The mouth of a gecko is small so the prey should not be any larger than one-half the length of the gecko’s head. If it is too big he might eat it but might not be able to digest it. Smaller things should be watched to because if they eat too much, like too many meal worms, that could cause a blockage due to too many at one time.

# 3 Hydration

For a healthy and successful bowel movement and just like us people hydration is one of the very important things. The gecko needs to be hydrated properly because if not the body will draw fluids from other parts of the body like the digestive tract. Available water should be there for both your pet and also you.

# 4 Temperature

A gecko is a cold blooded creature and needs a constant heat to stay alive. You can use a heating pad or under tank heater to keep your tank at the desired temperature. Body temperature has a lot to do with the metabolism of a gecko, the lower the temperature the slower the metabolism. This in turn can cause the gecko to improperly digest it’s food. 92 to 95 degrees on the hot side of the tank is the best temperature for a gecko’s digestion.

The best thing to do if you think your gecko is impacted is to take them to a good vet. By increasing the warm side of tank to 90 degrees this will help to increase the metabolism. Give them a bath in Luke-warm water a couple of times a day to help soften the stool in their stomach. A couple of drops of olive oil on their nose for them to lick off will help in lubrication and act like a laxative.

Do the things mentioned above and you will cut down on one of the major Leopard Gecko problems of ever becoming impacted.
